Dinah Shapiro
Dinah Shapiro (b.1963) has been drawing, crocheting, and working with ceramics for over twenty-five years at the Creative Growth Art Centre in California. Her stylised, ceramic work exemplifies the trial and error process of working with glaze and tools to achieve the muted, detailed and highly sophisticated look that her totem-style pieces embody. Shapiro is a generous, sociable woman who shares her excitement about creativity and art making with the other artists in the studio, often using the faces of her friends and fellow artists to inspire a drawing or sculpture. Shapiro explains that her process of art making is a cathartic release—she often finds herself rushing to make work when she feels overly emotional about a life experience, conversation or just a tough day on public transportation.
