Robin Wise

U-Z

Robin Wise (b.1961) originally from Stirling, has lived in Aberdeen since 1991. He draws from a mix of his memory, photographs, pictures he has acquired (postcards, calendars etc.) and he sometimes asks staff to print out specific photos from the internet such as 'a jazz musician' or 'Aberdeen'. All of these tend to relate to his day-to-day life, for instance he might ask for the jazz musician because he had been to a jazz concert over the weekend.

The lines and angles that he chooses to draw are the parts that stand out and interest him. His choice of two-tone black and white drawings enhances the two-dimensional quality of his work. This becomes especially evident in his exploration of the width and depth of lines rather than shading. Wise is a self-taught artist who was recognised as being on the Autism Spectrum shortly after his birth. He lives in Newton Dee, an intentional community on the outskirts of Aberdeen that supports adults with learning difficulties and other special needs.
