In March 2024 the New York Outsider Art Fair opened its doors to artists and art lovers, new and old, and I was excited, for the sixth year, to be part of it. I presented familiar faces, alongside new artists that I met and had the pleasure of starting to work alongside over the past year, many of whom made their American debuts. Click on the artists name to read more about them and their art practice:
- Kate Bradbury returns with some fun characters made from found objects, including old piano keys.
- Catherine Garrigue creates beautiful, detailed drawings that are an absolute necessity for her psychological balance.
- Naoki Hakuta breaks images down into small brightly coloured shapes and patterns to make up the whole.
- Pradeep Kumar returns with his carved toothpicks and matchsticks featuring birds and figures.
- Cara Macwilliam makes her third appearance with magical energy drawings, and new larger ethereal drawings alongside small white sculptures.
- Jesse James Nagel with his wild, surreal drawings born from his imagination make quite a statement when you look into the details.
- Yuka Nohda creates ‘Nohdama’ pieces made by winding raw wool and leftover weaving threads together, inserting cardboard bobbins inside each piece.
- Kenta Ohuchi draws large works with bold, sweeping arm movements with immense energy, moving his whole body as if it were a full-body exercise.
- Shinichi Sawada makes a splash with new intriguing wood-fired ceramics, pushing his practice even further.
- Marie Suzuki has just one work, a stunning double sided paper fan, featuring her signature patterns and motifs.
- Candice Swallow, without sight, creates powerful marks built up over several layers, all in tonal colour palettes.
- Yoshihiro Watanabe creates small intricate leaf sculptures, that were shown for the first time last year.
